What Was the Marketing Thing 20 Years Ago?

Back when I started working in Marketing two decades ago, my clients thought that having the perfect Yellow Pages ad, AM radio ad, or direct mail piece would make them successful. They thought all they had to do was scatter-shot a million people and have a miniscule percentage take them up on their offer and make millions of dollars. 

Today, entrepreneurs I talk to obsess over fancy funnels, Facebook ads, and Instagram grids...still thinking THESE strategies will make them millions...if they can just get ‘enough’ eye-balls on their offer.

Truth is...none of that crap mattered back then and it doesn't matter now! 

Listen, friends, the mass market doesn’t exist anymore...and this is great news for us - entrepreneurs and small business owners! Our modern economy is made up of micro-markets, small pockets of very specific people, with specific interests and needs. And thanks to the Internet we can reach them without having to sift through the mass market.

Now, don't get me wrong...all of these strategies above can work, but not without understanding the timeless principles of marketing that always have worked and always will work...even as the tools will continue to change. 

And rather than sinking a bunch of money into tools I teach my clients how to master the principles below so that they can succeed in growing and scaling their business without hustling, burnout, or throwing away money on tools that will not work without the following in place:

  1. Knowing your value, what you’re actually selling, owning it and communicating it. 
  2. Growing your visibility and creating relationships - online and in-person - in ways that you actually enjoy.
  3. Creating and making a compelling offer.

These are foundational elements to marketing and selling that if you have in place in your business will make your success inevitable! I know this because these are the principles I've practiced over the last 16+ years in my own business and have observed in my most successful clients, and now teach to and coach all of my clients on.

With these elements in place, just about any marketing or sales strategy that you want to use WILL work, which frees you from funnel hell, grid disaster, or Facebook jail so you can get busy doing the outreach you love, connecting with YOUR people and making more revenue!
