How to Believe When You Have No Evidence

May 12, 2021

As I write to you today I'm at cruising altitude on a Southwest flight to Tampa to meet with my coach and mastermind for a couple days of meetings.

Preparing for this trip and two days of meetings has me deep in thought about belief. During our meetings we will be planning out our businesses for the next 4 years and how we're scaling to $1 million in revenue and beyond. Sounds simple enough, eh? Uh, no. It's exhilarating and scary as hell, all rolled into one!

But it's all worthless, pie-in-the-sky, airy-fairy bullshit if I don't believe it's ever going to happen for me. I don't have to believe 100% that I can build a million dollar company, but I do have to believe that it's possible.

I do believe it's possible because I've watched my coach and plenty of other peers do it, so there's that, a teeny-tiny kernel of belief.

I like to think of belief in my ability to build a million dollar business like I think of my ability to take this plane ride and end up in Tampa.

I know it's possible to take a plane to Tampa, people do it all the time. But, basically I have no evidence that this plane that I'm on right now will end up in Tampa. The evidence I do have includes hearing the pilot say we're going to Tampa, talking to the passengers around me that believe we're going to Tampa. But other than those pieces of evidence, what else do I have to rely on?

My belief.

I choose to sit, back, relax, enjoy my flight and simply believe we're going to Tampa. No drama, no wringing of hands or freaking out. My thought is "that's where I'm headed and that's where I'm going to end up today."

How can I be so chill and full of belief? Because, this is what I'm also thinking...

  • I'm gonna make it to Tampa today. Now, it's possible we have a detour on the way like a flight delay, a thunderstorm that prevents us from landing on time, or maybe we have to land in Orlando because the plane gets low on fuel after circling the airport waiting to land (all scenarios I've had happen in the past). But I have faith that eventually we'll get to Tampa.

  • I choose to trust the experts I've chosen to help me get there - Southwest airlines, my pilot, and the flight crew - that they know what they're doing and have set this plane on a course to get us to Tampa.

  • I don't have to believe yet 100% that we'll land in Tampa - anything could happen - but I'm borrowing some belief from the flight crew - they seem pretty calm and confident - until I can see Tampa with my own eyes.

So, here's the question I have for myself and you can ask yourself too...can I also have similar thoughts about my million dollar business? Can I read this email and replace "Tampa" with "a million dollar business" and not puke? How can I be as chill about creating a million dollar business as I am about getting to Tampa. It all has to do with what I'm thinking about each.

Yes, I know...in reality we actually have to do a bunch of stuff to create our results and achieve our goals...we don't just get to sit in uncomfortable, tiny seats for a couple hours, eat bad snack-mix and water and end up at our goals, like I'll do on this flight and end up in Tampa.

However, what if our belief could be that easy? We don't have to know exactly how at the beginning. What if we could just suspend our disbelief, be as delusional as the guys who invented air travel while standing on the ground, and take our business journey one step at a time, allow ourselves to have fun, experiment, fail, learn, try again and in the process impact lives for good with our service...and end up making a million dollars (or end up in Tampa)? That's what I'm aiming for!!

If you feel like you could use some help with your belief in creating the business and lifestyle you envision, let's talk. I've been there, I understand and I can offer you the clarity and perspective to understand exactly what's standing in your way and what are the steps you can take to clear the way to achieving your goals for yourself and your business. And whether we decide to work together or not, you will walk away equipped to change the trajectory of your business and begin believing in your potential at a whole new level. I believe in you!

Cheers,
:)Melissa
